OpenFront on Steam — What Changes and What Does Not

OpenFront is heading to Steam Early Access. The browser version stays free and unchanged; the Steam client is ad-free and faster. No game rules or numbers change.

The short version

  • The browser version is not going away. It stays free with the same features — Steam is an additional option, not a replacement
  • What the Steam client actually adds is no ads and better performance. No change to game rules or numbers has been announced
  • Cross-platform play is stated, so the guides and calculators here apply either way
  • Release timing lives on the store page, not here — this guide deliberately does not print a date that will age

OpenFront is coming to Steam Early Access. First things first: the browser version is not going away. The developers state it stays free and exactly as it is today. Steam is an additional client, not a replacement.

No change to rules or numbers has been announced. The calculators and guides on this site apply to the Steam build too — same servers, same codebase, and cross-platform play is explicitly stated.

Release date, price, and supported languages can all move, and printing them here would only make this page wrong later. The Steam store page is the source of truth.

What the Steam client actually buys you

The developers gave three reasons.

No adsThe client is ad-free
PerformanceRunning outside a browser tab means more of your hardware is available
Load timesAssets live on your machine instead of downloading each session

Steam achievements come with it, and the store page describes plans for better offline support plus more modes and leaderboards in the full version.

Early Access is expected to run about six months. The game stays free to play, with a stated possibility of in-game purchases or subscriptions later.

One change already shipped — WebGL

If the game has felt smoother recently, that is not your imagination. The developers finished migrating rendering from Canvas to WebGL. Handing the drawing to your GPU instead of the CPU stabilises frame rates, and the difference shows most when a match is crowded and when you pan across a large map.

You do not need to wait for Steam for this — it is already live in the browser. The v33 announcement also cites a 65% improvement in late-game performance.

Does the guide content change?

No. Everything on this site is extracted from the game’s own source, and the Steam build ships from that same source. Concretely:

  • Combat, economy, and troop-cap formulas are unchanged
  • The lobby options behave the same — including the Doomsday Clock and water nukes
  • Map data, terrain, and coordinates are identical

If a patch does change a number, it lands in the patch value history automatically.

What to do right now

Nothing, really. The browser version is the same game on the same servers. Play at openfront.io; when the Steam client arrives you are switching clients, not accounts.

If you are new, start here:

Want to put numbers in yourself? The calculators and the troop cap calculator apply to browser and Steam alike.

Facts on this page come from the developers’ Steam announcements and store page. Game numbers are extracted from source automatically and show up in the patch value history when they change.
